BOSTON, Mass. – The longest winning streak in UMass Boston Women's Tennis history would come to an end on Thursday afternoon in the Beacons' final tune-up of the spring before the NCAA Tournament next month. HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lyons would sweep through the doubles as sophomores
Elena Albano and
Ayonna Stuppard took on freshmen Kara Greenlee and Alissa Ortiz in a tightly contested #1 Doubles matchup that went in favor of Greenlee and Ortiz, 8-5. Teaming up for the first time this season, freshman
Shreya Saravana Rakshana and junior
Lydia Chan were taken down, 8-2, in the #2 Doubles by junior Mareike Mueller and sophomore Izzy Kruse.
Needing a sweep in the singles matches to continue their winning streak, UMass Boston would remain competitive across all five of the singles, before ultimately falling short of the comeback. The #3 Singles would be the first to finish, which secured the win for Wheaton, as Stuppard fell to Ortiz in identical 6-1 sets.
The #2 Singles would go in favor of Greenlee over Albano in a pair of 6-4 sets while the #4 Singles saw junior
Skylar Robles fall to junior Zoe West in two straight sets of 6-3 scores.
Getting the first win of the afternoon for UMass Boston, Chan would outduel Mueller in comeback fashion after dropping her first set, 6-4. The junior would come back for the 7-5 win in set two and then win the tiebreaker set, 10-3, to capture the #1 Singles.
Continuing the momentum on the backend of the singles, Rakshana notched her first collegiate singles win with her #5 Singles victory over freshman Haylee Doiron in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-3, closing out the afternoon for the Beacons with two consecutive match wins.
