Late Goal Draws Men's Soccer Even with Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, C.T. - A defensive struggle was bookended by big time goals from each side as UMass Boston Men's Soccer found the equalizer late to salvage a draw on the road against the United States Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, United States Coast Guard Academy 1

UMass Boston (8-2-2, 2-0-1 LEC)
United States Coast Guard Academy (1-3-5, 0-1-2 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears' lone goal of the night came shortly after the opening whistle. In the 15th minute Cole Miller found the back of the net to give Coast Guard an early 1-0 advantage.

Despite peppering the Coast Guard goalie with shots on goal, the Beacons were held scoreless for over 80 minutes. Their comeback hopes were kept alive, however, by the combined goalkeeping efforts of Victor Reyes and JJ Devine.

With Qasim El-Ashkar sidelined due to injury, the two backup keepers have held strong in tandem. After letting up the opening goal, Reyes recorded five saves in the first half. Playing the entire second half in net, Devine snuffed out two more shots while keeping the Bears scoreless.

Any hope for the Beacons escaping without a loss was reliant on a score in the waning minutes of the match. For that assignment, they turned to their hottest goal scorer in Logan Erickson Potter. After a Marron Acheampong shot was saved by the Coast Guard keeper, Erickson Potter collected the rebound and cashed in on his first shot attempt of the night.

The 82nd minute score kept the Beacons out of the loss column with a 1-1 draw in New London.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Erickson Potter has scored five goals in the last four games after recording just one in his first four games of the season
  • The Beacons outshot the Bears 28-18 including a 17-8 advantage in shots on goal
  • The UMass Boston goalkeeping unit lowered their collective goals against average to 1.50
  • Coast Guard has tied four consecutive matches

WHO'S NEXT
After tying their last two matches, the Beacons will look to get back into the win column when they travel to Keene State College for an LEC showdown at 1 PM on Saturday, October 7.
