Men's Soccer Shutout on the Road Versus MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Qasim El-Ashkar made nine saves for UMass Boston Men's Soccer against MIT on Saturday night as the Beacons fell against the Engineers, 1-0, at Roberts Field and dropped to 1-2-1 on the season.

UMass Boston (1-2-1)

Skidmore College (1-3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman midfielder Ryan Limas recorded the only shot on goal for the Beacons in the 2nd minute of play but was turned away by junior goalkeeper Lukas Hanson-Puffer. That would be the only shot UMass Boston would record in the first half of the contest. The Engineers tacked on nine shots, four of which reached El-Ashkar in net, but were denied on all four attempts by the junior goalkeeper.

A corner kick to start the second half for the Beacons would not result in a scoring opportunity as both teams went quiet for the first 15 minutes of the half. Senior forward Alex Weiler fired on El-Ashkar in the 62nd minute and junior defender Aidan Hallinan did the same in the 72nd minute with both players unable to net the ball.

It would not be until the 76th minute when junior midfielder Garrett Robinson took a pass from senior Will Seiple on the far side and headed it just inside the far post for the only goal of the game. Freshman midfielder Luan Cruz and Lima would each record shots that sailed wide of the net in the final 10 minutes of play as the Beacons fell 1-0 on the road.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Beacons were outshot 18-3 and 10-1 in shots on goal, recording no shots on goal in the second half of play
  • UMass Boston held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks
  • This was the 21st meeting all-time between MIT and UMass Boston and first since 2019
WHO'S NEXT
UMass Boston continues their road trip to start the season with a road matchup against Worcester State University on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM. The Beacons have won their last five matchups against the Lancers and hold an 8-3 record in the all-time series.
