No. 15 Tufts Slips Past Baseball In Extras

Drew Metzdorf recorded a pair of home runs in the 6-5 loss to the Jumbos

BOSTON, Mass. – A squeeze bunt in the top of the 10th inning plated the game-winning run for the 15th ranked Jumbos of Tufts University as they rallied from a 5-0 deficit to down baseball 6-5 Wednesday evening at Monan Park.

UMass Boston 5, #15 Tufts University 6 (10 inns.)

UMass Boston (16-6)
Tufts University (17-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In one of the most anticipated non-conference games of the season, the Beacons came out firing led by a pair of home runs from Drew Metzdorf. After chasing the Jumbos' starter in the first inning, everything seemed to be going the Beacons way as they plated five runs through the first two innings.

Unfortunately, UMB would threaten but would not plate another run for the rest of the evening, as Tufts chipped away at the lead.

They made it a one-run affair in the third scoring four runs, before tying the game in the top of the seventh. The crucial 10th inning, saw the Jumbos take advantage of a pinch hit triple, which set-up the squeeze play at home, with Jackson Duffy plating the go ahead run.

Silas Reed, who was the Jumbos' ninth pitcher to step on the hill retired the Beacons in order to pick-up his second win of the year. Alex Amalfi, the Beacons number-one starter came in, in the top of the ninth inning in relief to shut down a then bases loaded situation for Tufts. Unfortunately, Amalfi would surrender the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to drop his record to 5-2 on the year.

Metzdorf led the Beacons with three RBI and two runs scored as he continues to tear the cover off the baseball. Between Tuesday's LEC win rout of Plymouth State and Wednesday's contest against the Jumbo's Metzdorf slugged a team-leading 1.333, with three home runs.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Wednesday's contest featured 15 different pitchers between the two squads and a combined 26 strikeouts, and 14 walks
  • The non-conference meeting was the first between the Beacons and Jumbos since the 2010 NCAA New England Regional Tournament in which UMB went on to win their first-ever regional title and trip to the College World Series; That year the Beacons eliminated Tufts from the regional with a 3-2 and 12-6 win
  • All-time the two regional rivals are now 3-3
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Tufts and UMass Boston at Monan Park
  • Tufts combined for 12 hits, while the Beacons were held to just five
  • DJ Lopes was the lone Beacons reliever to not surrender a hit in his two innings of work
WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will host Keene State College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a Little East Conference doubleheader.
