BOSTON, Mass. – Baseball saw their offensive output come to a screeching halt as cross-city rival MIT held the Beacons to just one run on their way to a 6-1 decision Monday afternoon at Monan Park.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 1, MIT 6
UMass Boston (4-1)
MIT (1-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED
MIT who had faced three top-25 teams coming into Monday's contest got their first win of 2022 in impressive fashion. The Beacons, who combined for 41 hits and 46 runs through their first four contests, were held to just two hits in the non-conference tilt.
MIT opened the scoring in the second inning with Reed Tubbs scoring on a pass ball, while Cory O'Shea made it a two-run game moments later on a fielder's choice.
UMass looked to have a serious scoring threat in the third inning as they loaded the bases courtesy of two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Drew Metzdorf would drive in a run on a ground out but that would be all the Beacons could muster from their bases loaded, one out opportunity.
MIT pushed their lead back to three in the fifth, and secured the victory in the top of the ninth scoring two more runs to take the Beacons out of the contest.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Despite defensive struggles, UMass pitchers were able to record a combined 13 strikeouts compared to just two walks
- For the first time this season, the Beacons failed to record an extra base hit
- The loss dropped UMass Boston to 8-5 all time against MIT
- Their single run was the fewest the Beacons have posted in the series since 2012
WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will jump on a plane and head to Texas where they will play a four-game series with Concordia University in Austin. Their first game is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. EST.
