De Andrade's Brace Leads Men's Soccer Past Pride

Nilton de Andrade scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) scored a goal late in each half, to lead UMass Boston men's soccer past visiting Springfield College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 2, Springfield College 1
(UMass Boston 2-0)
(Springfield College 0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons All-American midfielder capped off a 3-goal week with a game-winning goal with 3:18 to play. De Andrade received a pass from graduate student John Santos (Brockton, Mass.) in the center of the box with a defender all over him. He calmly dribbled to his right and towards the goal line, before rocketing a shot off the underside of the bar from an extremely tight angle.

De Andrade opened the scoring with 14.5 seconds to go in the first half. Kudi Onyejose (East Greenwich, R.I.) fired a long throw-in into the box that found the feet of freshman Jacob Marks (Brookline, Mass.). Marks' shot slid through several players before De Andrade redirected it into the Springfield net.

Junior keeper Qasim El-Ashkar (Salem, Mass.) earned his first career win as a Beacon. The Springfield transfer came on to start the second half and made three saves on four shots. Freshman JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) did not face a shot in the opening 45 minutes.

Springfield's Jack Rosenberg scored the lone goal for the visitors. After freshman Maitoe Suppasuesanguan was taken down just outside the Beacons box, Rosenberg fired a free kick from 25-yards out that skipped just over El-Ashkar's hand to tie the game in the 58th minute.

Springfield junior goalie Chris Prizio made two saves on four shots in the loss.

Neither side was able to create any real chances in the first half until the final two minutes.

Springfield earned their first corner kick of the game in the 44th minute. The corner kick found the head of Ethan Boileau with the keeper out of position, but the shot went just wide of the post.

UMass Boston made the Pride pay less than a minute later when they took advantage of a long throw-in opportunity.

After Rosenberg tied the game in the 58th minute, UMass Boston had a golden chance to tie the game less than four minutes later. UMass Boston's tic-tac-toe passing found Mauricio Martinez (Revere, Mass.) in the center of the box, but his shot beat the keeper but went just wide of the post.

Springfield would put the pressure in in the final 25 minutes, but Emelson Barbosa (Dorchester, Mass.) and Gerardo Castaneda (Providence, R.I.) combined to make a goal-line clearance and a second clearance from Castaneda was waived off for an offside.

After de Andrade gave the Beacons the lead in the 87th minute, the Beacons limited the Pride to just one corner kick and no shots over the final 3:18.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMass Boston held an 8-7 edge in shots and the two teams tied with four shots on goal apiece. The Pride earned a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
