Baseball Falls At No. 22 Southern Maine

Alex Amalfi struck out nine in six innings of work against the Huskies

GORHAM, Maine – The 22nd ranked Huskies of Southern Maine combined for seven of their eight runs over the final two innings to hand baseball an 8-1 Little East Conference loss Tuesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, #22 Southern Maine 8

UMass Boston (3-4, 3-4 Little East Conference)
Southern Maine (17-8, 8-4 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore righty Alex Amalfi (Ashland, Mass.) had an impressive showing for the Beacons in the conference loss.  The Ashland native went a season-best six innings and allowed just one run on four hits.  He also struck out a career-best nine batters, and did not surrender a walk.

For the Huskies Bryce Afthim countered Amalfi's performance with seven scoreless innings of work.  The righty improved to 6-0 on the year, after allowing four hits, and one walk.  He also struckout five.  Ben Lambert closed out the contest with five strikeouts, while allowing the only Beacons run in the top of the ninth.

Aidan Blake (Lakeville, Mass.) ended the Huskies' shutout bid in the top half of the final inning on an RBI single to left, which scored Danny Collazo (Stamford, Conn.).  Unfortunately, the Beacons comeback bid was short-lived as USM closed out the contest, to earn the regular season sweep of UMB.

Southern Maine did not score their first run of the day until the fifth inning on a sac-fly.  They would then tack on two runs in the seventh, and five more in the eighth to secure the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Nico Kydes (Stamford, Conn.) had the lone extra base hit for the Beacons, a double
  • Mike Doherty (Brewster, Mass.) and Alessio Pressamarita (East Hartford, Conn.) each went an inning on the hill and combined for two strikeouts
  • The Beacons total five hits, while the Huskies finished with 10
  • Since the 2016 season, UMass Boston is now 8-4 against the Huskies
WHO'S NEXT
The Beacons will travel to WestConn tomorrow for a conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
