Women’s Soccer Falls In LEC Title Match AT WestConn

Beacons season ends with 2-0 loss in Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. – The women's soccer team saw their 2021 season come to a close as they were handed a 2-0 loss in the 2021 Little East Conference championship game by top-seed WestConn Saturday afternoon at the WAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With Saturday's win WestConn has now won six of the last seven Little East Conference championships, and their 12th in program history. The title match marked the third-straight meeting between the Beacons and WestConn, with UMass Boston earning a 4-0 win in 2019.

WestConn got on the scoreboard in first 56 seconds of the contest and held that slim lead until the 56th minute to seal the victory.

Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) finished with seven saves, including five in the first half. WestConn led in shots in the first 45 minutes 11-5, while in the second half the two rivals were even at 8-8.

Saturday's match marked the final in the careers of program record 14 seniors in Caroline Richards (Duxbury, Mass.), Abby McCulloch (Weymouth, Mass.), Grace Oliver (Rockland, Mass.), Jackie Turner (Plymouth, Mass.), Kenya Wade (Cambridge, Mass.), Mary Jo Murphy (Worcester, Mass.), Grace McGettrick (Marshfield, Mass.), Morgan Palma (Halifax, Mass.), Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.), Cal Pitts (Marshfield, Mass.), Dani Anderson (St. Augustine, Fla.), Jahlyla Ocampo, and Katie Pasquale.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UMass Boston was making the program's fifth appearance in the LEC title game (2010, 2012, 2014, 2019, 2021)
  • The class of 2021 will end their careers with an overall record of 50-16-4, and are the only class to ever play in three straight conference tournament games
