Men's Soccer Downs Wentworth To Earn Fifth-Straight Win

Senior Josh Madden scored a goal in his return to the lineup

BOSTON, Mass.—Seniors Josh Madden (Milton, Mass.) and Cam Pattison (Cohasset, Mass.) scored to lead UMass Boston men's soccer past host Wentworth Institute of Technology 2-1 on Wednesday night at Sweeney Field.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 2, Wentworth 1
(UMass Boston 8-2)
(Wentworth 6-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beaocns scored twice in the opening half hour and limited the hosts from there, to earn their fifth-straight victory.

UMass Boston wasted little time getting on the board, scoring on the first shot of the contest. Senior Gerardo Castaneda (Providence, R.I.) lofted a long pass from beyond midfield towards the box where Madden put a shot past a diving Louis Quintero at 2:19.

Wentworth nearly tied the game in the 21st minute when Jomar Martins rifled a shot towards the net, however, freshman goalie JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) made a diving stop to punch the ball out of bounds.

The Beacons took a 2-0 lead at the 26:15 mark when junior Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.) gained possession towards the top of the box and slid a pass to Pattison, who put a shot inside the right post.

The Leopards pulled within one at the 32:24 mark. Nathan Gosselin sent a pass across from right to left Paolo Ruggeri who put home a shot to the left side.

Jacob Dukeshire flicked a header from close range in the 51st minute but Beacons junior Qasim El-Ashkar (Salem, Mass.) stepped in front and came up with the save, keeping the tying goal off the board.

A Quintero save in the 73rd minute led to a rebound and an opening along the left side. However, the second-chance bid by senior Yuran Texeira (Praia, Cape Verde) was cleared out by a Wentworth back line defender, keeping it a one-goal game.

Devine and El-Ashkar each made three saves in the victory, while Wentworth's Quintero made two of the team's three saves.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Madden made his return to the Beacons lineup. The senior midfielder played in the Beacons opener against Salve Regina on September 1 but had been out due to an injury for over a month.
  • The two teams finished tied with 11 shots apiece and Wentworth earned a slim 7-5 edge in shots on goal. UMass Boston led the Leopards 7-3 on corner kicks.
  • With the win, UMass Boston improved to 8-0 all-time against their Boston neighbors. The two programs have played in each of the past seven seasons with the Beacons outscoring Wentworth 22-7.
  • UMass Boston played without United Soccer Coaches (USC) National Player of the Week Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) for the first time this season.
  • The Beacons have outscored their opponents 19-3 during their current five-game winning streak.
  • Head coach Jake Beverlin is sitting on 97 head coaching wins. The Beacons ninth-year head coach (eight seasons) would be the second coach in program history to reach the 100-win mark.

WHO'S NEXT

UMass Boston will head home to host Rhode Island College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in a huge Little East Conference contest. The Anchormen (4-0) are the lone undefeated team left in the LEC, while the Beacons are one of five teams in the LEC with one conference loss thus far.
