Men's Soccer Settles For 2-2 Tie At Keene State College

Josh DeAlmeida scored the tying goal in the 73rd minute

Box Score KEENE, N.H.—UMass Boston men's soccer was forced to settle for a hard-fought 2-2 conference tie on Saturday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.

THE BASICS
UMass Boston 2, Keene State 2 (2OT)
(UMass Boston 10-2-1, Little East 4-1-1)
(Keene State 3-5-3, Little East 2-1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) and junior Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.) each scored for the Beacons who notched their first tie of the season.

De Andrade paced the Beacons with a three point day, as he also picked up an assist on DeAlmeida's goal.

In net, JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) made one stop-a key save in the 58th minute to keep the game tied at 1-1.

UMass Boston took the lead in the 27th minute, when the Beacons were awarded a penalty kick after a Keene State foul in the box.  De Andrade stepped up and made no mistake, beating Keene State goalie Anthony Pasciuto with a shot to the left.

In the 38th minute, the Owls drew level, as Denis Fleming played an inch perfect ball over the top, and Brandon Comire snuck in at the back post to slot home from almost point-blank range.    Pasciuto kept the game even with a stop on John Santos (Brockton, Mass.) in the 40th minute.

Keene State should have went in front in the 51st minute, as Fleming put a shot wide, then Mbambi Mbungu hit the intersection of post and crossbar just a couple of minutes later.  The Owls did take the lead in the 72nd minute, as Rahul Drukpa's shot was blocked, but it went right to the feet of Fleming, who netted his fourth goal in three games.

Only 30 seconds later, the Beacons had tied it again, as de Andrade played in DeAlmeida, who clipped the ball over Pasicuto to knot the score for a second time.

While neither team could generate a shot in the first overtime, the Owls had Pasciuto to thank for preserving the tie in the second OT. De Andrade was one-on-one with the keeper in the 104th minute, but the keeper parried the shot over for a corner kick. Minutes later, Josh Madden (Milton, Mass.) broke into the box and had a look from a tight angle but sent his shot wide of the far post. Mbungu had one final chance in the dying seconds but put his shot over the net.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Saturday's tie was the Beacons first tie since the 2019 Little East Conference Quarterfinals, when the Beacons went to penalty shots at Western Connecticut State after 110 scoreless minutes.
  • Keene State held a slight 14-12 edge in shots, while the Beacons led 5-3 in shots on target. UMass Boston also owned an 8-3 lead on corner kicks.
