Women's Tennis Sweeps Huskies To Clinch Top-Four Seed

Freshman Aya Kamil went 2-0, including earning her first career doubles win

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's tennis dropped three or fewer games in every match, to earn a dominant 9-0 Little East Conference victory over visiting University of Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Five Beacons went 2-0 and seven UMass Boston players earned victories to help the Beacons wrap up the fourth seed in next week's LEC Tournament.
 
Lydia Chan (Quincy, Mass.), Lia Vassiliadis (Weymouth, Mass.), Elena Albano (Haverhill, Mass.), Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) and Aya Kamil (Weymouth, Mass.) each went 2-0 in the win. 
 
Vassiliadis and Moriarty teamed up to open the match with an 8-0 blanking of Maggie Brock and Lily Madden at second doubles. 
 
UMass Boston pushed the lead to 2-0 at number one doubles when Chan and Albano downed Emma Nassif and Kenadi Sawyer 8-1. 
 
The Beacons completed the sweep of doubles action at third doubles. Skylar Robles (Spokane, Wash.) and Kamil picked up an 8-2 win over Breanna Miclette and Rachel Grome. 
 
Vassiliadis continued her dominant day when the junior cruised past Sawyer 6-0, 6-0 at second-flight singles.
 
Albano secured the match victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own at third singles. 
 
Moriarty made it 6-0 UMass Boston at fourth singles, when she breezed past Miclette 6-1, 6-1. 
 
Sophomore Tanya Kibiy (Rockville, Md.) earned her first collegiate singles victory at fifth singles, when she registered a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Madden. 
 
In the most competitive of the match, Chan, who was named the LEC Rookie of the Week on Monday, delivered a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nassif at number one singles.
 
Kamil completed the match sweep with an 8-1 pro-set victory over Cote at number six singles.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Tuesday's 9-0 sweep was the Beacons third sweep of the year and their second 9-0 victory of the season. 
  • Robles earned her first collegiate victory at third doubles, while Kamil (third doubles) and Kibiy (fifth singles) each earned their first collegiate doubles and singles wins. 
  • With the win, the Beacons moved into second place in program history for conference victories (5-2). The only team to finish with more LEC wins in program history was the 2019 team that went 8-1 during conference play. 
  • The Beacons have now won five of the past six meetings with the Huskies, including back-to-back 9-0 shutout wins. 
  • Moriarty moved into a tie for ninth-place in career singles victories (18) with her win at fourth singles. 
WHO'S NEXT 
 
UMass Boston will close out the regular season on Saturday, when they travel to Rhode Island College for a rematch of the 2019 LEC Tournament Championship Match.
