Women's Hockey Settles For Conference Draw With Castleton

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) made 45 stops to help women's hockey secure a 1-1 New England Hockey Conference tie with Castleton University Saturday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Castleton University 1 (OT)

UMass Boston (11-8-2, 7-5-1 New England Hockey Conference)
Castleton University (10-8-3, 7-3-2 New England Hockey Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Flagg's 45 save performance marked the most stops for the senior netminder since her 47 save showing against nationally-ranked Middlebury College.

Kelsey Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) recorded the lone goal for the Beacons with less than seven minutes to play in the first period.  Ryan put on a solid display of puck handling behind the Spartans goal.  She then cut in front of the Spartans goal and put the puck into the top high corner.

The first period was a shooting gallery between the two conference rivals as the two combined for 23 shots on goal.  They then each added 15 more shots in the second period with neither team able to add another dent on the scoreboard.

It was in the third period, that the Spartans finally tied the game at 1-1 with Sophia Vingi scoring the game-tying goal.  Samantha Munroe brought the puck up through the neutral zone uncontested.  She then found a wide open Vingi who fired off a perfect shot to beat Flagg who was screened by another Castleton player.

With the score deadlocked at 1-1, the two teams headed to overtime.  Castleton dominated the extra period, but all seven of their shots were denied by Flagg.
