Volleyball Powers Past Emmanuel For Non-Conference Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by four hitters who finished with 10 or more kills volleyball cruised to a 3-1 non-conference win over Emmanuel College Tuesday evening at Andy Yosinoff Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After hitting just .083 in the first set to give the Saints a 25-22 win, the Beacons offense came alive in a huge way over the final three frames.  In the second set, the Beacons began to build their momentum thanks to a 25-17 win.  From there it was all UMB as they finished off the Saints with a  25-8 win in the third and a 25-9 win in the fourth.

The Beacons used a combined .309 hitting percentage to clinch their seventh win as they continue one of their best starts in recent memory.  Freshman Marcelle Tiscareno (El Paso, Texas) led all hitters with 11 kills, and finished second in the match with a.526 hitting percentage.

Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.), who sparked the Beacons rally in the second set finished with 10 put-downs and hit an impressive .615.  Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) and Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) round out the quartet of Beacons hitters as the duo each recorded 10 kills. 

Carsen Komminsk (Worthington, Ohio) finished with a match-high 26 assists, while fellow setter Christina Elliott (Camas, Wash.) registered 17 helpers.  Defensively Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) made quick work in the back row with her 19 digs. 

Emmanuel saw Mary Shelow finished with a team-high five kills in the non-conference loss, while Carly Church collected 13 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Beacons hit an impressive .435 in the second set, .357 in the third, and a match-high .524 in the fourth
  • Thursday's match marked the first meeting between UMB and Emmanuel since 2003 and was their first win over the Saints since 1999
  • All-time the Beacons now have five wins against the Saints
  • With her 10 kills, Shi now sits with 1,180 kills which has her sitting just 11 kills away from moving into a tie for third all-time
  • Shi also sits 71 digs away from recording her 1,000th
  • Chianco is now just 100 digs away from becoming the fifth player in program history to record her 1,000th career dig

WHO'S NEXT

The Beacons will host Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday at 7 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
