Volleyball Swept On Final Day of California Trip

LA VERNE, Calif. – On the final day of their California trip volleyball was handed a pair of losses as they dropped back-to-back 3-0 decisions to Whittier College and to the University of La Verne Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first match of the day against Whitter, gained the early 1-0 lead thanks to a 25-20 win in the first set.  UMB then dropped the second stanza by the final of 25-18, before falling in the third set by the final of 25-20.  Against La Verne, the host Leopards downed the Beacons by the finals of 25-18 in the first, 25-14 in the second and 25-18 in the third.

Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) moved over 1,300 kills for her career after registering 10 kills in the first match, and seven in the nightcap.  She now needs just five digs for her 1,000th, as she continues to lead the Beacons offense in 2018.  Against Whittier, Shi was the lone Beacon to finish in double-digits in kills.  Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) put down six kills in the loss.  Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio) finished with 10 assists, while Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) put-up 18 digs.  Czapiewska also scored a match-high five aces, but the Beacons struggles at the service line continued as they recorded 12 service errors.  They were also handed 12 receiving errors by the Whittier servers.

At the net UMB saw Maslach and Marcelle Tiscareno (El Paso, Texas) dominate all contest.  Maslach recorded a career-high five block assists, while Tiscareno posted the team's only solo block and seven block assists.

Against La Verne, UMB's offense struggled as they hit just .063, while the Leopards combined for a .264 hitting percentage.  Shi dropped in seven kills, while fellow Californian Sarah Doyle (Glenside, Calif.) registered six kills and a team-high .308 hitting percentage. 

Carsen Komminsk (Worthington, Ohio) combined for 10 assists in the loss, with fellow setters Christina Elliott (Camas, Wash.) and Maslach combining for 12 assists respectively. 

Chianco closed out the weekend with 15 digs and had one of the Beacons face aces. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Saturday's first match marked the first-ever meeting between the Beacons and Whittier College
  • The Beacons are now 0-3 all-time against La Verne, with Saturday's meeting marking the first since the 2012 season
  • With her now 1,300 kills, Shi is now second all-time in program history behind the all-time leader and three-time All-American in Shannon Thompson '13
  • Maslach also became the newest member of the 1,000 club, as she recorded her 1,000th career assist against La Verne
  • Maslach is now the ninth setter in program history to join the exclusive club

WHO'S NEXT

The Beacons will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Plymouth State University for a 6 p.m. conference match.
