Men's Hockey Cruises Past Curry College 6-1

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior captain Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) potted his third career hat trick to help UMass Boston men's hockey dominate Curry College 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 6, Curry 1

(UMass Boston 2-0)

(Curry College 1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Larkin scored all three of his goals as part of a four-goal second period, as UMass Boston raced out to a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes. He finished the day +4 with three goals on five shots and a team-best 5-for-11 showing in the face-off dot.

Juniors Gabe Chuckran (Media, Pa.) and David MacGregor (Azusa, Calif.) and sophomore Nolan Redler (Winchester, Mass.) also scored in the win. Chuckran and freshmen Nick Albano (Beverly, Mass.) and Zack Bross (St. Louis, Mo.) all finished with two points in the victory.

Sophomore goalie Bailey MacBurnie (Beverly, Mass.) made 17 saves on 17 shots to earn his first win of the 2017-18 season. He was less than a minute away from his first career shutout, before Curry scored with 43 seconds remaining.

Michael Snow potted the lone goal of the day for Curry, with Tyler Lindstrom and Brandon Zajicek picking up assists on the play.

After allowing just one goal in his collegiate debut, Frank Cundiff allowed six goals on 40 shots in the loss. Senior Chris James came on with 4:32 remaining and made one save for the Colonels.

The Beacons opened the scoring 13:38 into the first period, when Redler scored off passes from Bross and Albano. Bross skated into the zone from the near side and then picked out Redler with a perfect centering feed for an easy tap-in.

UMass Boston doubled their lead at 17:48.  This time it was Jack Riley (Wrentham, Mass.) leading the rush and the freshman found MacGregor out in front, who calmly tucked a shot just past the outstretched leg of Cundiff.

Larkin kept the momentum going into the second period, as he scored just 26 seconds into the stanza. Garrett Gallagher (Ashton, Pa.) sent a pass across the blue line to Chuckran and Larkin tipped Chuckran's blast over Cundiff's shoulder for a 3-0 advantage.

Chuckran added a goal of his own at 8:02. Cundiff stopped a hard wrister from tyler Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) but the rebound fell right to Chuckran, who easily potted home the power-play tally.

UMass Boston added their third goal of the period just 1:29 later. Bross forced a turnover by the Colonels in their own zone and Redler picked up the puck and found Larkin on the doorstep. Larkin waited out Cundiff's move, before roofing a shot for his third goal of the year.

Bross would play a hand in the final goal of the night as well, as the freshman chipped it across to Larkin for the hat trick at 18:46.

Curry College avoided the shutout thanks to a phenomenal play by Snow. Snow carried the puck into the zone, beat a Beacons defender, and then roofed a shot with 43 seconds left.
