Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – With a three goal second period, third ranked Norwich University was able to keep the top-spot in the New England Hockey Conference standings as they defeated women's hockey by the final of 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Even at 1-1 through the first period, Norwich broke the draw at the 4:16 mark of the second frame with Robyn Foley finding the back of the net. Ten minutes later Sophie McGovern and Sarah Schwenzfeier each found the back of the net to make it 4-1 game heading into the second intermission.
The final goal of the contest came on the power-play at the 9:19 mark of the third, with McGovern scoring her second of the night to cap-off a three point performance (2g, 1a).
The Beacons lone goal came with 24 seconds left in the first period off of a slap-shot from Grace Fisher (Vienna, Va.). Alli Bianchini (Sterling Heights, Mich.), who recorded the game-winning goal in last season's NEHC Tournament semi-final game at Norwich, assisted on the play.
Between the pipes Rachel Myette (Duxbury, Mass.) combined for 29 stops, while Norwich's Laurie King registered 13 saves to improve to 10-0-1 on the year.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Saturday's contest was a rematch of the 2016 NEHC Tournament championship game in which the Beacons defeated the Cadets 2-0 to win their first-ever conference championship
- With the loss the Beacons now sit in second place in the conference standings behind Norwich, with Manhattanville College closing out the top-3
- Saturday's game marked the 17th meeting all-time between UMass and Norwich
