HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston led by two goals on three separate occasions, but couldn't hold off a late charge by the host Mustangs.
Four of the five Beacons goals came from freshmen, in the second game of their first true collegiate road trip. Freshmen Derek Caruso (Port Washington, N.Y.) and Dakota Keene (Poland, Maine) each picked up a team-high two points in the tie, with Caruso scoring his second short-handed tally of the season.
Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.), Ryan Cusin (Detroit, Mich.) and Nolan Redler (Winchester, Mass.) all scored, while sophomore Bryan Carter (Hudson, Mass.) was the lone upperclassmen to find the back of the net.
In goal, freshman Jordan Bustard (Flanders, N.J.) allowed five goals on 23 total shots.
CJ Stubbs and Jordan Carvalho both finished with a goal and two assists and Stubbs scored the game-tying, empty-net goal with just 52 seconds left on the clock. John Lauer, Mike Giaconmetti and Joseph Santino also scored for the Mustangs.
Sophomore goalie CJ Sharp made 34 saves on 39 shots, including registering one stop in the extra session.
UMass Boston raced out to a strong start in the opening stanza, when Nachbaur lit the lamp at 2:30 of the first. Sophomore Gabe Chuckran (Media, Pa.) and Caruso earned assists on the play.
The Beacons doubled their lead with 1:53 to go in the period, as Cusin picked up a power-play goal off a pass from Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.).
SUNY Morrisville turned the game around in the opening 3:19 of the second period, as Carvalho and Lauer (power play) both scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Less than 90 seconds after Lauer's tally, Carter gave the Beacons the lead back at 4:46. The sophomore took passes from Cody Wickline (Flower Mound, Texas) and Keene, before firing a shot past Sharp.
UMass Boston looked like they had put the game out of reach on two occasions in the third, only to have the hosts fire back.
Caruso made it 4-2 with a short-handed tally at 12:57 and then Redler stretched the lead to 5-3 with a power-play goal at 16:02. Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) picked up assists on the Redler tally.
With their backs against the wall, SUNY Morrisville scored twice in 41 seconds to tie it. Giacometti cut the deficit to 5-4 at 18:27 and Stubbs tied the game at five with an empty-net goal at 19:08.
From there it was all UMass Boston, as they attempted to escape with a win. The Beacons posted two shots before the end of regulation and Zach Lindsay (Egg Harbor Township, N.H.) attempted the only shot of overtime, but Sharp was up to the task.
