THE BASICS

#8/9 UMass Boston 5, Southern Maine 2

(UMass Boston 15-3-2, New England Hockey Conference 11-1-1)

(Southern Maine 5-14-1, New England HockeyConference 2-11-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After going into the second intermission tied 2-2, UMass Boston scored three power-play goals in a span of 7:48 to earn their sixth-straight win over the Huskies.

Seniors Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) and Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) struck five minutes and 14 seconds apart, before Bishop sealed the win with his second goal of the day with 4:11 left.

Lemire paced the Beacons with a team-best four points (one goal and three assists) to up his league-leading tally to 37 points. Fellow senior Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added three assists, while sophomore Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mass.) added two helpers.

Freshman defenseman Bryan Carter (Hudson, Mass.) was the only other Beacon to score, as he made it 2-1 in the second period.

Senior goalie Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) moved to 6-0-0 on the season, as he made 23 saves on 25 shots, including stopping all seven shots he faced in the third.

Southern Maine's Kyle Shapiro was busy all evening long, as the sophomore stopped 53 of 58 shots. The stellar goalie made 18 saves in the first, 20 in the second and 15 more in the third period in the loss.

Sophomore Alex Pantalone scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year for the Huskies, while freshman Aaron Carmichael potted his first collegiate goal.

Despite outshooting the Huskies 18-7 in the first stanza, UMass Boston found themselves behind 1-0. Pantalone stepped in front of an attempted clear by a Beacons' defenseman and redirected the puck past Andrews with his backside for a power-play goal at 13:52 of the first period.

UMass Boston finally broke through more than half way through the game, when Bishop scored for the first time. Larkin made a phenomenal no-look backhand pass right to Bishop in the near circle and Bishop's hard shot beat Shapiro stick-side for a 1-1 tie at 11:15. DeAugustine was credited with the secondary assist on the power-play tally.

The Beacons doubled their lead at 13:01, as they took advantage of a big rebound. Lemire's heavy shot was saved by Shapiro, but the rebound fell to Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) who left it for Carter. The freshman's shot floated past Shapiro for a 2-1 edge.

Southern Maine answered back at 15:56 with a goal off a two-on-one rush. Andrews made the initial save on Todd Bannerman's shot, but the rebound fell to Carmichael who slipped it past a diving Andrews for a 2-2 tie.

UMass Boston took the lead for good at 8:01 of the third period on a phenomenal play by senior assistant captain Derek Colucci (North Scituate, R.I.). Lemire once again started the play with a heavy shot that rebounded to Colucci on the near side, instead of teeing up for his own shot, he slid a pass to a wide open Miller on the far-side, who one-timed a shot past Shapiro for a 3-2 lead.

Lemire broke a six-game, goal-scoring drought at 13:15 when he scored through Shapiro's five-hole for a 4-2 lead. DeAugustine and Larkin both picked up assists on the play.

Minutes later, Bishop wristed a shot off a Southern Maine player that trickled home for a 5-2 lead at 15:49.
