Women's Soccer Wins Rutland Herald Invitational On Penalty Kicks

Box Score

RUTLAND, Vt.--UMass Boston women's soccer rallied from a 1-0 deficit with under five minutes to play in regulation and then won on penalty kicks 4-3, to take home the 2015 Rutland Herald Invitational Championship Trophy.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Bard College 1 2 OT (UMass Boston won on PK's 4-3)

(UMass Boston 1-0-1, Little East 0-0-0)

(Bard College 2-0-1, Liberty League 0-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a scoreless first half, both teams found the back of the net to force a pair of overtimes and eventually penalty kicks. Isabel Keddy-Hector gave Bard a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute, before Rutland Herald Invitational Tournament Most Valuable Player Jaclyn O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) scored her second goal in as many days with 4:18 remaining in regulation.

O'Grady dashed after a loose ball and just barely beat the goalie to the ball, before blasting it just inside the far post for her second collegiate goal in as many days. The freshman forward was joined on the Rutland Herald Invitational All-Tournament Team by senior captain Sam Bendick (New Egypt, N.J.).

The championship marks the first regular season title in five tries in program history.

Both teams would create a few chances in overtime, but freshman Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) was able to extend the game with her ninth save of the game pushing the game to penalty kicks. On the weekend, Fugiel went 1-0-1 and made 16 saves on 17 shots in her first two collegiate contests.

For the second-straight day, UMass Boston was held completely in check offensively in the first half. The Beacons were outshot 8-0 and 3-0 on shots on goal in the first half. The Beacons managed to put more pressure on Bard early in the second half, but still found themselves outshot in every stanza but the first overtime (2-2).

In penalty kicks, Natasha Stibor (San Francisco, Calif.), O'Grady, Kate Leavitt (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) all connected for the Beacons. On the flip side, after making their first three penalty kicks, Bard missed one penalty kick and Fugiel stopped Keddy-Hector to secure the tournament title.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

  • Sunday's title marked the Beacons first tournament championship since 2012, when UMass Boston defeated Western Connecticut State University in the Little East Conference Championsip Game.
  • O'Grady is the first UMass Boston freshman to score goals in her first two collegiate games since Tayla Andrews ('14) did so in 2010. Andrews scored goals in the first two games of a season in three of her four years as a Beacon.
  • Bard outshot UMass Boston 22-10 overall and 10-7 in shots on goal
  • Freshman Delmy Hernandez (Somerville, Mass.) and Julia Masionis (Milford, Mass.) made their collegiate debuts, while transfer Maddy Hunt (Asbury, N.J.) made her Beacons debut.

NEXT UP

After playing two first-time opponents, UMass Boston will play a more familiar foe, when the Beacons travel to Wesleyan University (Conn.) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Beacons and Cardinals faced off last year in the Beacons home opener with Krista Ledin ('15) scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 win.
