(Salve Regina 0-1-0, Commonwealth Coast Conference 0-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.), senior Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) and sophomore Giovanni Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each scored in the opening day win, as UMass Boston broke a three-year losing streak on Opening Day.

Barbosa, the cousin of last year's captain and Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Year Douglas Silveira ('16), finished with a team-best goal and an assist in his collegiate debut.

Senior captain Estive Sosa (Chelsea, Mass.) was rarely tested, as he easily posted the second shutout of his Beacons' career. The senior goalie made five saves, including three in the second half.

It took UMass Boston just 5:47 to get onto the board, as Dasilva slipped a right-footed shot past Michael Payan from just inside the penalty spot, after a scramble out in front had put Payan out of position. Fellow senior Elton Teixeira (Fogo, Cape Verde) picked up an assist on the play.

UMass Boston made it 2-0 just short of the 40-minute mark, as Barbosa sent his sliding shot from five-yards out into the top netting, off a Klismam Mendes (Fogo, Cape Verde) cross.

The Beacons capped off the scoring at 52:23, when Lima rocketed a shot from 25-yards out just over the keeper for a fantastic goal. Barbosa was credited with his first collegiate assist on the play.

THE NUMBER GAME

  • Tuesday's win marked UMass Boston's first season-opening win under Jake Beverlin and their first season-opening win over a team from outside Massachusetts since 1999. The Beacons had lost three-straight season openers and four-straight season openers against teams from outside the Bay State.
  • UMass Boston outshot the Seahawks 28-9 and held a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. DaSilva alone accounted for six shots.
  • Sosa's five saves marked a new career-high as a Beacon. Last year in six appearances, Sosa totaled 10 saves over 358 minutes.
  • The Beacons also owned a 6-3 edge on corner kicks.
  • UMass Boston hit two posts in the contest.
  • Sophomore Newton Jordao (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and freshman Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) each started and made their Beacons debut. In total, five players made their Beacons debut in the contest.

NEXT UP

UMass Boston will continue their season-opening, seven-game roadtrip on Saturday, when the Beacons travel to Thomas College for a 5 p.m. contest. The Beacons are 2-0 all-time against the Terriers, including a 4-3 win last season, in which Teixeira scored a hat track within 114 seconds to lead the Beacons to a comeback win.
