Billy Faust Posts First Collegiate Shutout In #8/9 Men's Hockey's 4-0 Win Over Huskies

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine—Four different players scored and junior goaltender Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) recorded his first collegiate shutout to help #8/9 UMass Boston (18-3-1, 13-2-0 ECAC East) cruise past host University of Southern Maine (5-16-0, 2-12-0 ECAC East) Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.

Faust made 23 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout in 24 career appearances. With the victory, he improved to 9-0-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 against the Huskies in three career starts.

Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Beacons with a goal and an assist, while Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.), Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) and captain Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) also found the back of the net for UMass Boston.

Junior Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) who notched an assist on the game-winning tally, ended the game with 12:13 to play, when his shot shattered a pane of glass behind the Huskies net. After a 25-minute delay while the Huskies facilities staff worked to fix the glass, the game was called in the Beacons' favor.

Southern Maine freshman Kyle Shapiro fell to 4-16, despite making 30 saves on 34 shots.

Although the Beacons dominated time of possession and the total chances, they weren't able to blow open the game until late in the second. Over an eight-minute span overlapping the second intermission, UMass Boston scored three of their four goals to extend their winning streak to four in a row.

Both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power-play, but Daley scored a short-handed goal in the second period, to snap a 14-game scoreless streak for the Beacons' penalty-killing unit. UMass Boston has now scored five of their 99 markers on the penalty-kill.

Lemire opened the scoring with 11.5 seconds left in the first period, when he took passes from MacIntyre and Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) and slipped a shot past Shapiro from the near post. With a Husky player playing without his stick, the Beacons moved the puck around to Lemire, who scored his second-straight and third overall game-winning goal in 11 appearances as a Beacon.

MacIntyre nearly made it 2-0 midway through the second, but the junior caught the crossbar on a wide-open chance on the power-play.

The Beacons made the Huskies pay later in the period, when Daley scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway on a Southern Maine power-play chance. Sam Boyd (Lake Worth, Fla.) broke up the play in his own zone and sent a pass forward to Daley who skated in with McStravick and a defender to his left. With the passing lane cut off, Daley slung a shot through Shapiro's five-hole for a 2-0 advantage at 16:17 of the second.

UMass Boston made it a 3-0 game just 1:06 into the third stanza, when McStravick tickled the twine for his fifth tally of the season. Freshman Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) picked up the lone assist on the play.

Kuhn capped off the scoring less than three minutes later, when he took a Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) feed and blasted home a slap-shot for a 4-0 lead at 3:52.

The game was called four minutes later, when MacIntyre's shot rose above the net and shattered a pane of glass.

Junior Alex Demchuk (Calgary, Alberta) made his collegiate debut in the victory.

UMass Boston will look to tie the 2012-13 team for the second most overall wins (19) in program history Saturday afternoon, when the Beacons travel to the University of New England at 4 p.m.
