#6 UMass Boston Breezes Past Skidmore 11-1 In ECAC East Quarterfinals

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.--#6 UMass Boston men's hockey (22-3-1) scored 10 unanswered goals to cruise to an 11-1 ECAC East Quarterfinal victory over seventh-seeded Skidmore College (4-19-3) Saturday night at the Beacons Ice Arena.

With their 11 goals, UMass Boston set a new program postseason record for most goals in a game, as they easily surpassed their nine goals scored against Bentley in the 1982 ECAC Division III Tournament.

The Beacons third-line of Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.), Josh Haverstrom (Coral Springs, Fla.) and Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all scored two goals to help UMass Boston earn a playoff win in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. Finger finished with two goals and three assists and a Beacons best +6 +/- rating, while DeAugustine added three assists and Haverstrom finished with three points in his first game back into the lineup.

With their big victory, the Beacons will host #11/13 Babson College in the ECAC East Semifinals next Saturday at the Beacons Ice Arena. The Beavers have ended the Beacons season in the ECAC East Semifinals in each of the past two seasons.

Senior First Team All-Conference forward Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) finished with two goals and two assists of his own, as he upped his nation-leading total to 48 points.

Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.), Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) and John Houston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also scored for the Beacons, who outscored Skidmore 20-3 in three matchups this season.

Junior Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) improved to 13-0-1 on the season, after making 23 saves on 24 shots.

Kenny Nelson scored the lone goal for the Thoroughbreds who ended their season on a seven-game losing streak. The loss marks the end of the careers of Skidmore's five seniors.

Sophomore Jack McDonald and junior Ben Freiberg combined for 45 saves on 56 shots in the quarterfinal loss.

Skidmore struggled to avoid the penalty box all afternoon long, as they amassed 43 penalty minutes on 12 penalties. The 12 penalties led to four of UMass Boston's 11 goals, as the Beacons finished 4-for-10 on the man-advantage. On the other side, Skidmore ended the day 0-for-3.

The first period action was full of back-and-forth play with neither team able to grab the upper hand. Haverstrom opened the scoring just 2:45 into the contest, when the freshman potted his second collegiate goal.

Nelson answered right back for the Thoroughbreds with a top-shelf snipe at 5:15, only to have Finger retaliate with the game-winning goal at 6:07 of the period.

UMass Boston blew the game wide-open in the second period with four goals, including three over the final 6:03 of the period.

Haverstrom made it 3-1 at 3:01 of the period, before Milam, Houston and Buco all struck in a three-minute-and-42-second span to give the Beacons a 6-1 lead after two.

Things got even more out of hand in the final stanza, as UMass Boston scored all five goals in less than 12 minutes.

DeAugustine potted the first goal of the period at 3:59, before McStravick made it 8-1 at 5:01 of the period off passes from Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.).

DeAugustine recorded his second of the day at 7:07, before Buco and Finger tallied goals 12 seconds apart to give the Beacons their final 11-1 advantage.
