HOW IT HAPPENED
Bowdoin took the lead just 23 seconds into the contest and never looked back behind a strong performance from Cronin.
The sophomore goalie stopped eight shots in the first, 10 in the second and 20 in the third period, to earn his first collegiate shutout in his 14th game with Bowdoin.
Offensively, five different Polar Bears scored, with the hosts striking for three goals in the first period and two more in the third stanza.
UMass Boston senior goalie Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) was charged with his first regular-season loss since his sophomore season, after allowing three goals on eight shots in the opening 20 minutes. Fellow senior Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) stopped 14 of 16 shots over the final two stanzas.
The Beacons struggled to get kind of comeback going because of a season-high 27 penalty minutes. In the first period alone, UMass Boston was whistled four times for 19 minutes.
BY THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston was shutout for the first time in 44 games. The Beacons had not been shutout since January 24, 2014, when the Beacons fell 2-0 to Babson at home.
- Bowdoin improved to 29-6-2 all-time against the Beacons. The Polar Bears are unbeaten in their last 12 games against UMass Boston (11-0-1) dating back to 2000.
