HOW IT HAPPENED
After two periods with the two teams knotted at 2-2, William Smith's Krista Federow broke the tie at the 12:50 mark of the third and Kiley Fewster tacked on an insurance goal at 16:09, to lead the Herons to a sweep of UMass Boston in the opening weekend of the season.
UMass Boston junior Lizzie Aveson (West Covina, Calif.) and freshman Kayleigh Beauregard (Detroit, Mich.) each scored their first goals of the season in the loss.
Sophomore transfer Rachel Myette (Pembroke, Mass.) made her debut in net for the Beacons and took the loss after stopping 25 of 29 shots.
The host Herons needed just 16 seconds to open the scoring, as Grace Durham scored unassisted to make it 1-0.
Aveson responded for the Beacons late in the first period on their third power-play opportunity of the day. Junior defenseman Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.) fed Aveson in the slot, and the junior ripped a shot over Maggie Salmon's shoulder to tie the game at 1-1 at 17:35.
William Smith bookended the period with goals, as their second goal came with just 11 seconds to play in the period.
After UMass Boston was called for back-to-back penalties in a 13-second span, William Smith finally converted on the 5-on-3 with a goal from Emily Burton at 19:49. Dori Craig and Rachel Carranza were credited with assists on the play.
The Beacons found the equalizer just 3:10 into the second, with their second power-play goal of the day. Beauregard took a pass from Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) and slid a shot past the Herons goalie for a 2-2 tie.
The two teams would stay scoreless for nearly 30 minutes, before Federow scored her second goal of the weekend at 12:50. Fewster tacked on the insurance goal at 16:09, to send the Herons off to their best start in program history.
