HOW IT HAPPENED

After UMass Boston handed the Herons losses in each of their first two games as a collegiate program, William Smith got some revenge Friday night, in the first of a two-game series to open the season.

William Smith jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held leads of 3-1 and 4-2, to earn their fourth win at the Division III level.

Sophomore goalie Maggie Salmon came up with a huge performance for the Herons, with 37 saves on 39 shots, as the Beacons constantly pressured the hosts, but had little to show for it.

After a scoreless first period in which UMass Boston outshot William Smith 11-7, the Herons scored two goals in 22 seconds-early in the second, to take the lead for good.

Rebecca Begley opened the scoring at 6:54 and Krista Federow added an unassisted tally at 7:16, that gave William Smith a two-goal cushion.

Morrisette got one back for the Beacons less than a minute later, as the sophomore took passes from Lizzie Aveson (West Covina, Calif.) and Maren Brown (Brainerd, Minn.), before beating Salmon at 8:03.

Begley potted her second goal of the game at 12:45 off of assists from Catherine Linehan and Egan Sachs-Hecht, to give William Smith a 3-1 edge heading into the third period.

Morrisette once again had the answer, as she used a tremendous individual effort to score at 11:31 of the third.

With the Beacons trailing by just one and under eight minutes to play, William Smith drew a penalty for their first and only power-play of the day.

A minute and 25 seconds later, Dori Craig made the Beacons pay, as she scored a power-play tally to push the host's lead back to two at 4-2.

UMass Boston senior goalie Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) made 16 saves on 20 shots in the loss.

  • The Beacons fell to 4-9 all-time in season openers with the loss.
  • The two teams combined for just eight penalty minutes, with UMass Boston going 0-for-1 on the power-play and William Smith going 1-for-1.
  • UMass Boston won 30-of-55 face-offs, with Morrisette winning a team-best 12-of-19.
