Babson Downs Volleyball, 3-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Less than 24 hours after earning a huge win over Wellesley College, volleyball was in the hunt for their second win of the week, however the Beavers of Babson College managed to overcome a first set loss to defeat the Beacons by the final of 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons came out firing in Saturday's non-conference match, as they earned a 25-18 win in the opening frame.  The Beavers would then battle back in the second to tie the match at 1-1, with a 25-20 decision.  The third set continued to be Achilles heel for the Beacons, as Babson cruised to a 25-13 victory to take a 2-1 lead.

With the match hanging in the balance, UMass tried to rally in the fourth, but it was the Beavers who pulled out a narrow 26-24 win to secure the victory.

Mary Donahue, carried Babson with a career-high 17 kills, while Jenny Karnes finished with nine putdowns.  For the Beacons Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) was held to just nine kills, as the Beacons offense struggled hitting just .062 in the four set loss.

Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished with 20 assist, and had seven digs and two aces.  Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) came-up with 22 digs, while Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) tallied 19 digs and eight kills.

Murphy and Baker led the Beacons at the net with seven of the Beacons 10 block assists respectively.

Elizabeth Sullivan, led the Beavers back row totaling an impressive 34 digs, while Krissy Robertson finished with 21 assists.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The win for the Beavers marked their first since October 15, 2005, the Beacons had won the last five matches
  • All-time Babson now leads the series 26-7, since their first meeting in 1981
  • Saturday's loss marked the third time this season that the Beacons have been held to under a .100 hitting percentage
  • As a team the Beacons finished with 74 digs, which is the third most in a match this season for UMB

WHO'S NEXT

The Beacons will host Plymouth State University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a Little East Conference match.
