Anchormen Use Big Second-Half Run To Knock off Men's Basketball 70-59

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Despite Gregory Young's (Dorchester, Mass.) fourth double-double of the season, UMass Boston men's basketball (10-10, 2-7 Little East) fell short against host Rhode Island College (14-5, 6-3 Little East) 70-59 Saturday afternoon at the Murray Center.

Young scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the second half and added 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to help the Beacons avoid the season-sweep. UMass Boston, who trailed the entire first half, took their first of two leads in the game at 35-33 five minutes into the second half, only to have the Anchormen respond with a 30-7 run to take control of the game for good.

Senior Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) added 13 points and five rebounds, while junior guard Layo Medina (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in with seven points and two assists in the losing effort.

Rhode Island College's Chris Burton registered a huge double-double of his own to lead the Anchormen. The First-Team All Conference forward finished with a game-high 29 points, to go along with his 10 rebounds. He knocked down 10-of-22 shots from the field, 4-of-8 three-pointers and all five of his free throws.

Senior center Victor Smith added a double-double of his own for the Anchormen with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Both sides struggled to get anything going offensively on a frigid January afternoon, with UMass Boston hitting just 17-of-64 (26.6 percent) of their shots from the field and 22.7 percent (5-of-22) of their 3-point attempts. The hosts struggled slightly as well, as Rhode Island College hit 36.4 percent (24-of-66) of their field goal attempts and 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) shots from distance.

The Beacons did manage to knock down 20-of-25 of their free throw attempts and they earned a 50-47 advantage on the glass.

Rhode Island College used their suffocating defense to lead by as many as 12 in the first half, before going into the break with a 29-21 advantage. The Beacons went just 5-for-27 in the first half, with Joseph, Medina and Steven McGuire (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) combining for 15 of the team's 21 points.

UMass Boston appeared to find their shooting stroke coming out of the break, as they opened the half on a 14-4 run.

Young and fellow senior Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for the first 10 points for UMass Boston, before Omar Benabicha (Saugus, Mass.) hit a lay-up with 15:33 left to play to tie the game at 33-33.

After a missed 3-pointer by the Anchormen, Karl Agenor (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds and hit two free throws to give UMass Boston their first lead of the game at 35-33. He would add a lay-up on the next possession to give the Beacons the lead back at 37-36 with 14:30 left, but that would be the Beacons' final lead of the contest.

Burton and Jerelle Washington responded for the Anchormen with back-to-back 3-pointers to kick off a 30-7 run. Burton would add two more 3-pointers and recorded 13 of his 29 points during the stretch, to give Rhode Island College their largest lead of the day at 63-42 with 6:08 left.

UMass Boston cut it to 13 on two separate contests, but they wouldn't get any closer, until freshman Gabriel Pereira (Brockton, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to play to give the final margin of 11 points (70-59).

The Beacons will have a long break, before they return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Eastern Connecticut State University.
