Manhattanville Rallies To Earn 5-4 Overtime Win Over Women's Hockey

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Sophomore defenseman Taryn Harris scored the first goal of her sophomore campaign 1:27 into overtime, to cap off Manhattanville College's (7-7-5, 5-3-3 ECAC East) 5-4 comeback victory over UMass Boston women's hockey (8-7-4, 5-4-2 ECAC East) Friday afternoon at the Beacons Ice Arena.

After falling behind 3-1 and 4-2, the Valiants scored the final three goals of the game to earn the season-sweep of the Beacons.

Sarah Sinning recorded a pair of goals for the Valiants, while senior captain Rachael Morrison added a career-high three assists to help the Valiants move a point ahead of UMass Boston in the standings.

Assistant captains Sydney Asselstine and Aubrey Bachand also found the back of the net for Manhattanville.

Freshman goalie Ekaterina Nikonova earned the victory in relief, as she was forced to make just one save in 16:06 of game action. Senior goalie Kirsten Shaughnessy made 16 saves on 20 shots, before being pulled in the opening minutes of the third.

The Beacons line of Kayla Smith (Woburn, Mass.), Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) and Alli Bianchini (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led the Beacons offensively. Bianchini recorded her first collegiate goal, while Smith (two assists) and Faia (one goal and one assist) each enjoyed two-point days.

Senior captain Alexandra Karlis (Parker, Colo.) and freshman Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) also scored for the Beacons, who dropped their third-straight conference contest.

Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made 26 saves on 31 shots, to fall to 5-4-1 on the season.

Manhattanville made the most of their power-play opportunities, with the Valiants finishing 2-for-3 on the man-advantage. The Beacons capitalized on their only opportunity of the day to make it 4-2, just 5:21 into the third period.

From there, the Valiants would scored two goals in a one-minute-and-52 second span late in the third period to tie it, and Harris sent the Valiants off with a win just 1:27 into the extra session.

The Valiants jumped out to a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the contest, when Sinning pushed a Beacons player off the puck in front of the net and slid it inside the near post. Kayley Romano was credited with the assist, after her shot from the point was stopped by a Beacons player, only to have Sinning take it away immediately.

After slogging through the next 10 minutes, UMass Boston came to life late in the first period and went into the break tied in shots at 8-8.

UMass Boston carried the momentum into the second period and found an equalizer just 2:19 into the stanza. Smith broke up a Valiants rush just outside her own blue line and chipped it past the last defender to a streaking Faia. With all five Valiants behind her, Faia skated in on Shaughnessy and beat her glove side to tie the game 1-1.

The same line gave UMass Boston a 2-1 advantage at 5:48, when Bianchini scored her first collegiate goal from an impossible angle. Faia fed her freshman teammate behind the net and Bianchini sent a line-drive shot off the back of Shaughnessy, from behind the goal line along the far board, that caromed off the goalie and just across the goal line.

The hosts added to their total with their third goal in 5:24, when Karlis added the Beacons' second goal from a surprising angle. Karlis stole the puck away from a Valiant just outside the crease and retrieved it behind the net. The senior forward tried to send a centering pass in front to Kiernan, but the puck bounced off of a Valiant player's skate and just across the goal line on the opposite of the net, before Shaughnessy could get her glove on top of it.

After a seven-minute scoreless drought, Manhattanville cut the deficit back to a single goal, when Asselstine tipped home a Morrison shot on the power-play. Morrison sent a low shot from up top that Asselstine redirected just inside the near-post, to make it 3-2 in favor of the hosts at 14:20 of the period.

Sinning nearly evened the game a minute later, but her shot from the left-circle hit off the inside of the right post and Burke managed to pin it to the left post to keep it at 3-2.

With their lead in danger of slipping away, UMass Boston finally got a break, as the Valiants were whistled for their first penalty at 3:43 of the third.

After a couple of unsuccessful rushes, Morrisette scored the goal of the day. The freshman retrieved the puck in her own zone and skated down the right-side of the ice and into the Valiants zone, and then proceeded to deke past one defender, before sending a hard wrist-shot over Shaughnessy's outstretched glove at 5:21.

The freshman's goal wouldn't be enough though, as Manhattanville scored a pair of goals in the next 10 minutes.

Morrison would be the spark behind both goals, as the senior captain helped cut the deficit to 4-3 at 12:33. With her team on the power-play for the third time, Morrison sent a hard blast through traffic that Burke stopped, but the rebound fell to Bachand, who easily slipped it past Burke to make it a one-goal game.

Less than two minutes later, Sinning tied the game at 4-4, thanks to some smooth stick-handling from Morrison. The senior brought the puck into the zone and weaved her wave across the ice towards the goal, only to have the puck stripped away before she could get a shot off. With Burke's full attention on Morrison, the puck slipped over to Sinning who sent a shot from a difficult angle into the net.

Harris capped off the day at 1:27 of the extra session, when the sophomore sent a low shot through traffic and into the far side of the net for a 5-4 victory.

UMass Boston will look to rebound on Saturday, when the Beacons travel to #3 Norwich University at 1 p.m.
