Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Cole Libby's four second half 3-pointers, the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine defeated men's basketball by the final of 67-62 Thursday evening in a Little East Conference contest in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.
The conference victory marked the first of the season for the Huskies, and fourth straight win over the Beacons. They now stand at 4-14 on the year, 1-7 in the conference. For the Beacons they fell to 10-9 overall, 2-6 in the Little East.
Libby was lights out from distance as the junior guard closed out the contest 5-for-7 from distance to lead his team with 15 points. He also grabbed 12 boards to record the game's lone double-double. As a team the Huskies finished shooting 61.5% (8-13) from behind the arc in the final 20 minutes.
UMass struggled offensively all night as they shot just 36.1% from the floor and 21.1% from 3-point range. The Beacons were also unable to hit the clutch free throws as they were just 14-for-25 in the conference loss.
Luc Ulysse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led UMass with 18 points, while Omar Benabicha (Saugus, Mass.) dropped in 12 to go along with two assists. Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) dominated the last for UMass with his 11 rebounds. The Brockton native also finished with eight points, and had one of the team's six blocked shots.
Along with Libby, Jacob Littlefield also finished in double-figures as the forward totaled 13 points in the victory.
Despite the outcome, the Beacons dominated the paint as they outscored their conference rivals 30-10. However, once the Huskies found their shot they could not be stopped, especially in the closing minutes of the contest.
The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island College for a 3 p.m. Little East Conference game.
