Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – A pair of Anna Daniels goals in the second period gave the host Spartans of Castleton State College a 2-1 ECAC East win over women's ice hockey Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
With the pair of goals from Daniels, the Spartans improved to 9-8-1, 4-5-1 in the conference, while the Beacons despite a 31 save performance from goalie Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) fell to 8-6-4 overall, 5-3-2 in the ECAC East.
Getting the Beacons on the board in the first 17 seconds of the contest on the power-play was sophomore defenseman Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.). The Colorado native received a pass at the top of the point, and delivered a shot through traffic to beat Castleton's Paula Stephens to give UMass the early lead.

Just over four minutes later, Daniels struck again to give the Spartans the lead and eventually the victory. The game-winner marked the seventh of the year for the forward.
UMass dominated the final two periods in shots, totaling 13 in the second and in the third. Stephens, however shut down the Beacons offense to finish the game with 33 saves. Both teams were even matched defensively as the Beacons tallied 24 blocked shots, while the Spartans finished with 19.
On the day, UMass was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Castleton finished 1-for-6 overall.
The Beacons return to action on Friday when they host Manhattanville College at 3 p.m. in the Beacons Ice Arena.
