Lemire Lifts #11/12 Men's Hockey Past St. Anselm College 5-4

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.—Junior Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) scored the game-tying and game-winning goals within a 2:03 span of the third period, to help #11/12 UMass Boston men's hockey (13-2-1, 8-1-0 ECAC East) finish their furious 5-4 comeback win over St. Anselm College (5-9-1, 4-5-1 ECAC East) Friday night at the Beacons Ice Arena.

Lemire, who had not scored a goal in his first 24 collegiate games, has now scored four in the past three contests, including his first career game-winner in the Friday night thriller.

UMass Boston trailed three separate times during the contest, including falling behind 2-0 in the opening stanza.

With the win, UMass Boston evened the all-time series at 23-23-1 all-time against the Hawks. The Beacons have now won five in a row in the series, with three of those games being decided by one goal.

Lemire teamed up with linemates Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) and Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) to combine for three goals and five assists. Buco registered a season-high three assists, while MacIntyre added a goal and two assists.

Senior captain Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) sparked the Beacons with a pair of first-period goals, to bring his season total to 10.

In net, junior Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) made nine of his 17 saves in the third period, to move to 5-0-1 on the season.

Sean Jenkins (one goal and two assists) and Brendon Kerrigan (one goal and one assist) each recorded multiple-point games for the Hawks, who dropped their third consecutive contest.

Hawks netminder Shane Joyce took the loss after stopping 36 of 41 shots.

St. Anselm College stunned the Beacons at 2:31 of the first period, when Brendon Kerrigan scored, just moments after a Beacons' power-play ended. The sophomore forward took a pass from Joey Agilato and blasted a slap-shot past Faust for a 1-0 lead.

Jenkins made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors at the midpoint of the period, when he jumped on a loose puck in the crease and poked it home at 10:35.

The Beacons responded back at 13:47, when Kuhn redirected a Mike Maciag (Plymouth, Mass.) shot from the point past Joyce to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Kuhn found the equalizer 32 seconds before the intermission, when he scored a power-play tally to tie the game at 2-2. Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) and MacIntyre registered assists on the play.

St. Anselm took the lead right back though early in the second period, when Tyler Estee blasted a shot from out front that slipped just inside the post. Jenkins and Bryan Sullivan picked up helpers on the goal.

UMass Boston tied the game for a second time at 5:57 of the stanza, when MacIntyre scored his seventh goal of the season, off a pass from Buco.

Daniels gave St. Anselm their third and final lead of the game 10 minutes later, when the senior forward buried a back-hand shot at 16:54. Jenkins and Kerrigan each recorded assists on the play.

UMass Boston struggled to generate any offense over the first 10 minutes of the third period, until Lemire lit the lamp for the first time. Buco sent a dart to Lemire just to the left of the crease and the junior slid home a shot from his knees to tie the game at 4-4 at 10:39 of the period.

Lemire gave the Beacons the lead 2:03 later, when he came in on a 3-on-1 rush with MacIntyre and Buco, and rammed home Buco's rebound for a 5-4 Beacons lead.

Saint Anselm struggled to get out of their own zone over the final 7:18, as the Hawks managed just one shot on goal before the final horn.

UMass Boston outshot Saint Anselm 41-21 for the contest and earned a 50-17 edge in the face-off dot. The Beacons ended the night 1-for-4 on the power-play, while the Hawks went 1-for-3 on the man-advantage.

UMass Boston will look to extend their winning streak to four in a row, when they host New England College Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
