Men's Soccer Blanks Southern Maine in Conference Opener

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – A four-goal second half and another strong defensive showing is all men's soccer needed as the Beacons cruised to a 4-0 Little East Conference victory at the University of Southern Maine, Saturday afternoon.

The shutout victory improves the Beacons record to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.  The host Huskies fell to 1-6-1 on the season, 0-1 in the conference opener.

UMass Boston dominated play from start to finish as they outshot the Huskies 22-2, 16-1 in shots on goal.  Junior goalkeeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) earned his second straight shutout and third straight victory as he improved to 3-2 on the campaign.

The Beacons broke the long scoreless draw in the 48th minute of the contest, when senior Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.), finally ended his scoring drought recording his first marker of 2014.  The All-Conference selection, broke through the Huskies defense and beat USM goalkeeper Charles Mull to the far post to make it 1-0 UMass.

Nine minutes later it was classmate Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) firing in a shot from about 17 yards out to make it a two-goal game.  Sophomore Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) earned his first point of the day, as he assisted on the play.  Barros would add to the Beacons lead in the 71st minute off of a Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Cape Verde) assist.  The Cape Verde native headed the ball home to all but secure the Beacons huge conference victory.

Junior Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) continued his recent scoring spree as he put the final nail in the coffin with an unassisted goal in the 79th minute.  Just like Pizzetti's marker, Dasilva dribbled through the Huskies defensive third and placed the ball to the far post.

The shutout conference victory marks the first for the Beacons since 2012, when they shutout Western Connecticut State University in the final home game of former head coach Myles Berry.  The Beacons earned a slim 1-0 victory over the Colonels.

UMass also dominated the match with a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.  Mull had a busy day for the Huskies totaling 12 stops, which was second most of his young career.

The Beacons return to action on Wednesday when they host Wentworth Institute at 3:30 p.m.
