Women's Soccer Rolls By Colby-Sawyer 4-0

Box Score

NEW LONDON, N.H.—Freshman Marina Kelly (Whitman, Kelly) recorded a career-high five points and UMass Boston's defense (2-2-2) earned their third clean sheet of the season as the Beacons rolled to a 4-0 victory over host Colby-Sawyer College (1-5) Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.

Kelly, who came into Wednesday's match with one goal and one assist, scored twice and added an assist to move into the team lead with her eight point and a tie for the team lead with her three goals and two assists.

Senior Ericka Garufi (Milton, Mass.) added a goal and an assist and Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied the game-winner with her third goal of the year.

Senior goaltender Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.) made five saves on five shots for her first shutout of the year and first since November 2, 2011. Perkins has started the year making seven saves in 135 minutes of scoreless action.

The Beacons dominated the entire way, outshooting the host Chargers 23-9 for the game and earning a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Karley Hamilton made eight saves on 12 shots to take the loss for Colby-Sawyer.

Ledin opened the scoring just 3:54 into the contest, when she found her own rebound and put it home for her 84th career goal. The senior All-Conference player has scored three goals in three career starts against the Chargers, as UMass Boston improved to 3-0 all-time against Colby-Sawyer.

The Beacons pushed the lead to 2-0 four minutes later when Kelly scored the first of her two goals. Garufi dribbled down the baseline and sent a chip pass back to Kelly, who fired a rocket shot past the hands of Hamilton into the right-hand corner of the netting.

Kelly returned the favor in the 22nd minute, when she sent a through-ball to Garufi, who sent a low-shot past Hamilton for a 3-0 edge at 21:37.
UMass Boston easily could have added to their lead before halftime, but Ledin and Kelly both connected with the crossbar, rather than the back of the net.

Kelly put the game out of reach in the 50th minute when the freshman drilled a shot from 25-yards out into the upper-right corner of the net.

UMass Boston will look to carry the momentum over to their next contest, as the Beacons host the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in both team's Little East Conference opener.
