Box Score HENNIKER, N.H.--Senior Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) scored 1:39 into the overtime session to help #15/23 UMass Boston men's hockey (3-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC East) escape with a 5-4 victory over ECAC East rival New England College Friday night at Lee Clement Arena.
With the win the Beacons remain undefeated on the season improving to 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ECAC East play. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the ECAC East.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Beacons at the hands of the Pilgrims. Last season, New England College handed UMass Boston two of their six losses, with a pair of one-goal wins. Friday's victory helped UMass Boston improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
UMass-Boston would open the scoring early as the Beacons would score two goals in the opening 4:19 of play. The Beacons would start the scoring 80 seconds into play as Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) would force a Pilgrim turnover in the zone and feed Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) who would net his second goal of the season. The duo of DeAugustine and MacIntrye would team up again at the 4:19 mark as DeAugustine would get the goal assisted by MacIntrye.
The Beacons would extend their lead to 3-0 at the 8:52 mark as Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) would take advantage of a UMass-Boston power-play firing in a shot that would deflect off a Pilgrim defender and in.
NEC would battle back with two goals of their own in the first period, including a rebound by Shawn Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) assisted by John Quinlan (Marlton, N.J.) and Aaron Madsen (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and a power-play score by Cheyne Matheson (Wheatley, Ontario) assisted by Kyle Arenson (Fort Collins, Colo.).
UMass Boston would go up 4-2 6:50 into the second period as Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) would feed Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) on a breakaway as the Beacons would notch their second short-handed goal of the season. NEC would get the goal back at the 11:20 mark as Matheson would net his second power-play goal of the game assisted by Bryce Nielsen (Laguna Hills, Calif.).
NEC would score the lone goal of the third period tying the game at 4-4 just 1:04 into the period as James O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) would come through with the third power-play goal of the game for the Pilgrims assisted by Matheson and Nielsen.
UMass-Boston would control the tempo right from the faceoff in overtime getting off a quick shot that would be saved by NEC goalie Sebastian Andersson (Sundyberg, Sweden). The Beacons would then net the game-winner as Buco would come through with a goal off a nice pass from Brett Mason (Rowley, Mass.) just 1:39 into overtime.
NEC finished the game with the slight 33-32 advantage in shots on net. The Pilgrims finished the game 3-for-11 on the power-play, while the Beacons were 1-of-4 with the man-up.
Picking up the win in net for UMass-Boston was Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) who notched 29 saves. NEC's Andersson finished with 27 saves for the Pilgrims.
NEC returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they host ECAC East foe Babson College. UMass-Boston will hit the ice again on Saturday, Nov. 8 as well as the Beacons will travel to take on conference opponent St. Anselm College at 4 p.m.
