Box Score BOSTON, Mass.—Jackie Tavella scored a power-play goal and freshman goalie Jessica Thulin posted 31 saves to lead visiting Colby College (2-4-0) over UMass Boston women's hockey (5-2-3) at the Beacons Ice Arena.
Tavella's first-goal of the season came3:28 into the second period and proved to be the lone goal in a contest between two teams going opposite ways. After starting the year 0-4-0, Colby College has won two in a row, while the Beacons saw their winless streak extend to five (0-3-2), after a 5-0-0 start to the season.
UMass Boston junior goalie Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) enjoyed another stellar outing, as she posted 21 saves, including making three breakaway saves in the opening frame.
Thulin was barely tested in the opening two frames, before making several huge saves in the third period en route to her first career shutout.
Colby ended the day 1-for-5 on the man-advantage, while UMass Boston finished 0-for-4 on the power-play.
With less than 10 seconds remaining on the power-play, Tavella sent a shot from the circle through traffic into the lower-left hand portion of the net. Katie Tang was credited with an assist on the play.
UMass Boston attempted to find an equalizer over the final 36 minutes, as they outshot the Mules 26-13, but the Beacons failed to score a goal for just the second time.
The Beacons will be back in action Tuesday December 9 when they play their third consecutive NESCAC opponent, as they will take on Connecticut College at 7 p.m.
