Women's Hockey Rolls Past William Smith With 6-2 Win

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time since the 2008-09 season women's ice hockey started their new season with a 2-0 record as they defeated William Smith College by the final of 6-2 Saturday afternoon in the Beacons Ice Arena.

Saturday's victory capped off an impressive start to the Beacons new season as they closed out the two wins with a combined 10 goals respectively.  For William Smith College they fell to 0-2, with two new faces finding the back of the net in Saturday's non-conference loss.

The Herons actually earned their first-ever lead at the 13:14 mark of the first period, when Lizzy Weingast was credited with a goal, after the puck tipped in off of a Beacons defenseman.  William Smith would maintain that lead until the third minute of the second period, when Alexa Cappione (Massena, N.Y.) evened the score at 1-1 on her first tally of the year.  Defenseman Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.) picked-up her second assist of the weekend on the play.

The Beacons would then take control of the scoreboard, when freshman Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) pushed in a loose puck in front of the goal to make it 2-1 UMass.  Forty-two seconds later, senior Kelsey MacIsaac (Durham, N.H.) fired home her first goal of the year to cap off a three-goal second period.

Looking to extend their lead in the third, UMass turned up the intensity as they registered three more scores, the first of which came from transfer Sara Alonardo (Wilmington, Mass.).  Fellow transfer Lizzie Aveson (West Covina, Calif.) assisted on the play to make 4-1.  Michaela Faia (Malden, Mass.) pushed it to a four-goal affair at 6:53 of the third period, when she was able to push home a perfectly placed pass from Kristen Embrey (Highlands Ranch, Colo).

William Smith would get their first multi-goal game in program history at 15:57 when Hedi Droste recorded her first collegiate goal.  Assisting on the play was Weingast, making her the first player in William Smith hockey history to record two points in a game.

The final marker of the day came from Faia on an empty-netter with 28 seconds left in the contest. Alonardo and Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.) were credited with the assists, their second and third of the year respectively.

Earning the win between the pipes for UMass was Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.).  The senior registered 18 stops in her first start of the season.  Megan Messuri finished her first collegiate start with 43 saves, as the Beacons offense peppered the freshman goaltender.

The Beacons closed out the contest with 49 total shots, while the Herons offense had a much better showing totaling 20 shots in the loss.  The Beacons finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while William Smith went 0-for-5.

The Beacons return to action on Friday when they travel to New England College for a 4 p.m. ECAC East contest.
