Four Goal First Half Pushes Men's Soccer to 11th Victory

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Four different players each netted a goal in the first half as men's soccer cruised to a 4-0 non-conference win over Worcester State University Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field.

The Beacons outplayed the host Lancers from start to finish to earn their 11th win of the season.  With Wednesday's victory, the Beacons have now recorded three 11-win seasons in the last four years, two of which belong to head coach Jake Beverlin.  Overall, the Beacons stand at 11-4-1, while the Lancers dropped to 5-8-2.

UMass' offense peppered Worcester State's defense all match as they totaled 20 shots in the contest, while on the other side of the pitch, the Lancers offense was limited to three shots by a strong defensive showing.

Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) notched his eighth win and fourth shutout without having to make a single stop in the non-conference match.

Elton Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) started the first half scoring spree for the Beacons in just the third minute of the contest after he chipped in his seventh goal of the season.  Miguel Alcantar (San Diego, Calif.) sent in a perfectly placed cross that found the foot of Teixeira to make it 1-0 in favor of the Beacons.

In the 20th minute it was Marcelo Cunha (Goiania Goias, Brazil), who made it 2-0, after registering his first goal of the 2014 season.  Less than a minute later Luis Mattos made it a three-goal affair on an unassisted play.

The final marker of the first half came from senior Douglas Silveira (Sete Lagoas, Brazil), his fourth of the year, on a shot that hit the top left corner.

UMass also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Beacons return to action on Sunday when they travel to Plymouth State University for a 1 p.m. Little East Conference match.  The match will be played at the New Hampton School in Plymouth, NH.
