Southern Maine Tops #9/11 Men's Hockey 6-3

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine—Despite two goals from Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.), #9/11 UMass Boston Men's Hockey (16-4-2, 9-4-2 ECAC East) couldn't overcome the University of Southern Maine (7-15-0, 4-11-0) on Senior Night at the USM Ice Arena in a 6-3 loss Sunday evening.

Five different Huskies scored as Southern Maine celebrated their four seniors in the second to last home game of their career.

Junior Troy Thibodeau led the Huskies cause with two goals, while Jamie Osborne added a goal and two assists.

MacIntyre led the Beacons with his third-straight, multiple-goal game, while fellow freshman Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) added the Beacons third tally. Freshman Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) added two assists in the Beacons first loss  in a month. The loss snapped UMB's eight-game unbeaten streak and is just their second road loss all season

The Beacons have had very little success in Gorham over the years. With the loss, UMass Boston fell to 0-9-1 in their last 10 games at Southern Maine and UMB hasn't won a game on the Huskies' home ice since December of 1995.

Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) made 23 saves on 27 shots, to fall to 14-4-2 on the year. Freshman netminder Josh Hillegas picked up the win for Southern Maine by making 24 stops on 27 shots.

The two teams skated to a 0-0 after the first period despite 18 combined shots. The scoreless first marked the first time this season that UMB had been held scoreless after 20 minutes.

UMass Boston got on the board first late in the second period, when MacIntyre took passes from Sitterley and Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and recorded his 17th goal of the year.

Southern Maine answered back 78 seconds later, when Mike Greene found the back of the net to tie the game at one. Angelo Vrachnas made it 2-1 Southern Maine with 20 seconds to go in the period, when he notched the only power-play goal of the contest.

MacIntyre evened up the score at two 51 seconds into the third, when he recorded his team-leading 18th goal of the season. Travis Daniel (North Brunswick) and Sitterley picked up assists on the play.

The Huskies responded in a big way, racking up three straight goals over the next 13 minutes, behind goals from David Nies, Thibodeau and Osborne.

UMass Boston cut the deficit back to 5-3 when Finger scored at the 18:13 mark for his eight goal of the season. Senior Tim Richter (Naugatuck, Conn.) and freshman defenseman Andrew Crawford (Medford, Mass.) tallied assists on the goal.

The Beacons comeback bid would fall short though, as Thibodeau flicked the puck into an empty UMB net with 39 seconds remaining to make it 6-3.

Southern Maine outshot the Beacons 29-27 for the contest, to help earn the split. The Beacons defeated Southern Maine 5-2 in the first meeting between these two teams.

UMass Boston will close out the road portion of their 2012-13 regular season with a day trip to the University of New England Monday at 3 p.m.
