LaRosa Leads Women's Hockey Past Buffalo State

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Looking for some retribution after Tuesday's 2-1 loss, women's ice hockey put together a total team effort behind a goal and two assists from Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) to defeat the Bengals of Buffalo State College by the final of 4-2 Wednesday afternoon in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.

LaRosa's first goal of the day gave the Beacons a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes to play in the period.  She would then assist the final two UMass Boston (5-8-1) goals to help her team past Buffalo State (5-9-1) as well as end a two-game skid.

The afternoon got off to a rocky start for UMB as Buffalo State converted on their first power-play attempt to take a 1-0 lead just 1:30 into the contest.  It would take almost 13 minutes for the Beacons to respond, but when they finally did it completely changed the momentum of game.

Sarahanne Cavolo recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 14:05 mark to tie the score at 1-1.  Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) and Angela Dandreo (Swampscott, Mass.) assisted on the play.  LaRosa's goal would give the Beacons their first lead over the Bengals in the two game series.  Her fourth marker of the year was set-up by Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, Mass.) and Lauren Tansey (Virginia Beach, Va.).  The assist marked the first career point for Tansey, while Greenberg's helper was her fourth of the campaign.

After the first intermission, Greenberg added to the Beacons lead with her team-best sixth goal as well.  LaRosa tallied her first helper on the seniors goal along with Emma Valli (Eastham, Mass.).  Buffalo State however was not about to go down without a fight as they made it a one goal game just over four minutes later on a Kendra Peters score.

Now with only one goal separating the two teams, UMB once again picked-up the pressure and would earn their second two-goal lead of the day when Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.) found the back of the cage to make it 4-2 with less than two minutes to play in the second period.  LaRosa was joined by defenseman Kelly Sharlow (Potsdam, N.Y.) as the two Beacons that assisted on the game-clinching goal.

In the third period, Buffalo State dominated the shots column, but it was the Beacons defense for the second straight day, this time anchored by sophomore netminder Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) that kept the Bengals off the scoreboard.  UMass' backline did an especially great job at completely neutralizing the Bengals offense when they went to an extra forward with well over three minutes left in regulation.  Burke was solid from start to finish totaling 22 saves, while Sarah Quigley and Jordan Lee combined for 20 saves respectively.

Both squads closed out the game with 24 shots a-piece.  On the power-play, Buffalo State was 1-for-4, while the Beacons went 0-for-3.

Women's Hockey returns to action on Saturday when they travel to St. Anselm College for a 3 p.m. ECAC East conference game.
