Tufts Drops Volleyball In Non-Conference Match

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Cate Desler and Heather Holz Tufts University defeated volleyball by the final of 3-0 Tuesday evening at the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Desler and Holz led the Jumbos to a dominating performance as they defeated the Beacons 25-16 in the first, 25-12 in the second, and 25-20 in the third.  The duo each scored seven kills in the non-conference victory. 

Rachel Furash registered 14 assists to quarterback the offense, while Sophia Acker combined for a match-high 17 digs. 

For the Beacons, Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) hit 12 kills and had a .233 hitting percentage.  Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio) registered 10 assists, and Macayla Chianco (Clearwater, Fla.) tallied 12 digs to lead the Beacons. 

Shi and Maslach were the only two Beacons to finish with a positive hitting percentage.  Errors continued to plaque UMB as they registered 20 attack errors, and 11 service errors. 

Tufts University rode an early 7-0 lead in the first set and never looked back as they gained a sizeable lead to take the set.  In the second set, Tufts hit .280 behind a set-high three kills from Nwankpa and Holz.  Furash tallied five assists, while Acker put-up seven digs to limit the Beacons to a .000 hitting percentage.  In the final frame, UMB tried to make a late set rally, but were held to just seven kills, while Tufts finished with 13 put downs.  The Jumbos hit a match-high .296 to clinch the victory.  Shi led the Beacons with five kills on nine attempts for a .556 hitting percentage.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With the loss, the Beacons have now dropped four-straight to the Jumbos
  • Shi now sits just 35 digs away from her 1,000th, while Chianco is now 13 away from her 1,000th
  • Shi is currently ranked sixth all-time in career aces with 180

The Beacons will pack their bags and head to California for three matches starting on Friday.  The Beacons will face Pomona-Pitzer at 7:30 p.m. EST.
