ATLANTA, Ga. – In their final match of the 2014 regular season, volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to Berry College on the second day of the Emory University Invitational.
The Beacons, who were hoping to build some momentum as they prepare to defend their conference championship next weekend, were defeated by Berry College, 25-12 in the first set, 25-13 in the second set, and 26-24 in the third set. With the loss UMass ends the regular season with an overall record 20-10.
UMass will now prepare to host the semi-final and championship match of this year's Little East Conference tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The Beacons will face the winner of the 4 vs. 5 match in the semi-final in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium. Start times for the two semi's and championship match will be announced early next week.
Against Berry College, the Beacons offense struggled from start to finish totaling just 22 kills in the match. Three players finished with four kills each. Setter Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.), who had back-to-back 30 assist matches yesterday tallied just nine helpers in Saturday's loss. Despite the tough showing, Baker earned a spot on the Emory University All-Tournament team.
Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) led the contest with 20 digs to cap off a strong tournament for the sophomore libero. Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) finished with a team-best four block assists, while Bri Sousa (Swansea, Mass.) totaled two block assists.
Volleyball will return to action on Saturday in the Little East Conference tournament. Also in this year's tournament will be the second-seeded Owls of Keene State College. The field of four teams will be determined after Tuesday's quarterfinal matches.
