QUINCY, Mass. – With a team hitting percentage of .271 UMass Boston volleyball remained undefeated in Little East Conference play as they handed Rhode Island College a 3-0 loss Saturday afternoon at North Quincy High School.
The win marked the fourth straight for the Beacons, who improved to 9-4, 3-0 in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College fell to 3-10, 0-2 in the Little East after Saturday's match.
UMass wasted little time taking the lead in the first two games as they handed the Anchorwomen 25-14 and 25-10 losses. In the third game, the two teams remained close for a while, with Rhode Island nipping at the heels of the Beacons for most of the third. However a late run by the Beacons proved to be the deciding factor and with a kill from Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.), the Beacons secured the 25-20 decision, which also marked the ninth straight win for UMB.
Leading the Beacons offense with eight kills was senior All-American Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.). Right behind her was Molly Witzmann (Encinitas, Calif.) and Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) with seven kills each. For Rhode Island College Michelle Malboeuf scored four kills.
Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had a strong day for the Beacons tallying 26 assists, while also scoring two aces. Jessica Ho was the Anchorwomen's top setter with 16 assists. At the end-line Brooke Nemethy (Oviedo, Fla.) continued her recent hot streak as she scored five aces.
Senior Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) continued her solid play on the backline with 14 digs, while the Beacons as a team posted a combined six blocks. Rhode Island matched that with six blocks of their own with four block assists going to Breanna Boyer and Malboeuf.
Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bowdoin College for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
