PAWTUCKET, R.I. – After a strong start to their 2017-18 indoor season the Beacons track and field teams earned a combined three Little East Conference weekly honors Monday afternoon.
Sophomore sprinter Wadeline Jonathas (Gonaives, Haiti) was named the Track Athlete of the Week, while Virgil Harrell III (Hamden, Conn.) earned Rookie Track Athlete of the Week honors. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Jonathas, Ashley Hernandez (Miami, Fla.), Lexy Bean (Danvers, Mass.), and Olivia Burnes (Paxton, Mass.) were named the Relay Team of the Week.
At the 6th Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open, Jonathas picked-up right where she left off, after quickly establishing herself as the most dominant sprinter in Division III today. The native of Haiti won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.02 seconds, while also setting a new meet and program record in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:17.43. Her time in the 200 was .92 seconds faster than the closest competitor. Her time in the 500 was even more impressive as she defeated the second-place finisher by almost three seconds.
For Harrell he had a strong collegiate debut as he posted the second fastest time in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:08.71. He also earned a top-15 finish in the 200-meter dash with a strong time of 23.35 seconds.
The 4x4 relay team completed their first meet of the 2017-18 season with a combined time of 4:09.21 seconds. That time currently has the Beacons sitting 12th in the country, and stands as the third fastest time recorded by a New England relay team after the first week of competition.
