Women's Tennis Dominates MCLA 9-0 On Opening Day

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—UMass Boston women's tennis (1-0) dominated from start to finish as they dispatched host MCLA (0-1) in 2 hours and 22 minutes en route to their third-straight season-opening win Friday afternoon at the Zavattaro Complex.

Senior Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) enjoyed a historic return to the team, dominating her singles opponent in straight sets to tie Denise Ridge ('06) for the program-record in career singles wins with 22. The senior from Newton already holds the career marks for overall wins (50) and doubles victories (28).

Four Beacons made their debuts in Beacons Blue, as UMass Boston did not drop a set in singles play and lost just six total games in doubles action.

Freshmen Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.), and Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) each finished 2-0 in the collegiate debuts, while sophomore Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) and freshman Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) each earned one victory.

Shea and Woytowicz earned the first point of the season, when the pair teamed up for an 8-0 victory at third doubles. The senior duo of Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Kloczewiak quickly pushed the lead to 2-0, when they took an 8-1 victory at top flight doubles. UMass Boston capped off doubles play with an 8-5 victory at second doubles, as Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) and Muntasser outlasted MCLA's Danielle Wiencek and Rebecca Waterhouse.

Singles play would be more of the same, as MCLA managed to grab more than one game in just one of the six singles matches.

Kloczewiak quickly knocked off her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles, before Shea clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number six singles.

Counts kept the shutout going with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number three singles and Muntasser had little trouble at top-flight singles, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win.

The Beacons finished off the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win from  Castelli at number five singles and a hard-fought 6-3, 6-1 win at number four singles from Celebi.

UMass Boston will return to action Saturday morning when they travel to take on Mount Holyoke College at 10:30 a.m.
