Rhode Island College Sweeps Softball in Little East Action

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Led by pitchers Emily Johnson and Jessica Borden the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College (9-6, 2-0 Little East) held softball to just one run as they swept the Beacons (11-9, 1-3 Little East) in a Little East Conference doubleheader by the finals of 4-1 and 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar Field.

Johnson and Border allowed just 10 hits in the twinbill and combined for three strikeouts respectively.

In the opener it was Lisa Polsonetti (Revere, Mass.) who led the Beacons at the dish as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Natalia Bouyea (East Longmeadow, Mass.) drove in the lone UMass run on the team's only extra base hit, a double in the top of the first inning.  Also making contact at the plate in the opener was Erika Vecchiet (Pequannock, N.J.) and Toni Scola (Worcester, Mass.).

For Rhode Island College Stacy Pokora recorded her team's only double of the game as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Johnson finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Michelle Zullo (Everett, Mass.) got the start in game-one and held the Anchorwomen to just five hits, while also striking out two.  All four runs, three of which were earned, came in the first three innings of what eventually turned into a pitcher's duel over the final three and a half innings.

After Bouyea's RBI double in the first, Rhode Island got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning as they scored their first run on Johnson's sacrifice fly.  Their second run would cross home plate on a passed ball.  The final two runs came in the third when Pokora and Johnson each drove in a run to give their team a three-run lead on the scoreboard.

The final innings moved extremely fast with neither team able to get anything going offensively.

In the nightcap it was Pokora once again leading her team to the win as she finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored.  Marisa Jandreau also recorded two hits, and drove in one run.

Bouyea earned here second hit of the day in game-two, as UMass combined for five hits.  Kara Willis (Burrillville, R.I.), fresh off of her win over Suffolk University on Thursday went all six innings and allowed eight hits.  She walked just one batter and fanned three others.

Rhode Island would get a run in the first, third, and fifth innings to secure the game-two victory and the sweep.  However just like game one the Beacons nearly got on the scoreboard in the top half of the first as they got runners on second and third with only one out.  Unfortunately the Anchorwomen were able to get out of the inning as they recorded back-to-back outs.  Pokora's solo shot to left center would give the Anchorwomen the 1-0 lead in the first.  Jandreau would then drive in the final two runs of the game on back-to-back RBI singles.

Softball returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Gordon College for a 3 p.m. non-conference game.
