Women’s Soccer Blanks Castleton For First Little East Win

HOW IT HAPPENED

Besides dominating in the offensive third of the field for nearly the entire contest, the Beacons showed tremendous composure in their defensive end to help record their fourth clean sheet of 2019.

The only time that Castleton truly had a chance to get on the scoreboard was in the opening minute of play in Saturday's conference match-up.

However the Beacons quickly turned that quick attack into a goal of-their-own, when Grace McGettrick (Marshfield, Mass.) knocked-in her fifth goal of the season at the 4:20 mark.  Mary Jo Murphy (Worcester, Mass.) assisted on the play, when she found McGettrick wide open on the far side of the goal on a perfectly placed cross.

Around the midway half of the first half, freshman forward Isa Andrade nearly made it a 2-0 lead for UMB after she picked the pocket of a Castleton back.  The forward immediately went at goal, but was denied on a great save by Castleton goalkeeper Loren Henderson.

The Beacons would then collect their second goal of the half less than two minutes before the break.  Kaylee Haynes (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted her first collegiate goal, when she knocked in another perfectly placed pass from Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.).

Crawford would receive a long pass from Morgan Palma (Halifax, Mass.) up the middle of the field.  She then broke through the Spartans defense, before finding Haynes wide open on the far side.

Grace Oliver (Rockland, Mass.) sealed the victory for the Beacons on the very rare corner kick goal.  The sophomore hit an arching long ball that was initially handled by Henderson.  However as she came down with the ball it fell out of her hands and into the side netting.

Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) made four saves to earn her fourth shutout of 2019, while senior Miranda Smith closed out the final 21 minutes of play to help secure the victory.
