Special Teams Shine In Women’s Hockey Win Over Castleton

RUTLAND, Vt. – Three second period goals, two of which came on special teams lifted women's ice hockey to their first four-point New England Hockey Conference weekend as the Beacons registered a 4-2 win over Castleton University Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, things escalated quickly in the second stanza.  The Beacons got on the board in the first two minutes with freshman Hannah MacDougall (South Dartmouth, Mass.) scoring her fourth marker of the season. 

Cailey Kozich (Wexford, Pa.) sent a long pass through the Spartan defense and MacDougall maneuvered her away around goaltender Alexis Kalm to tally to give the Beacons the lead.

The Beacons doubled their lead just over a minute later as Katie Leffler (Key Largo, Fla.) scored a shorthanded goal at the 3:05 mark of the second period. With the Spartans on the power play, Leffler forced a turnover, raced up the ice and scored to give the Beacons a 2-0 lead.

The Beacons went on the power play and added a third goal in the second period. After an initial shot from Bri Colucci (Lancaster, N.Y.) that was saved by Kalm, Kozich scored her second goal of the season after a scrum occurred in front of the Spartans net.

The Spartans got on the board late in the second period. At the 18:12 mark of the period, Casey Traill raced all the up the ice and beat two Beacon defenders to score her third goal of the season as the Beacons continued to lead 3-1. 

Kaitlin Bardellini would give the Spartans hope as the freshman tallied her first career goal at the 4:34 mark of the third period to bring the Spartans within one.

The Beacons would add an empty net goal late in the third period to solidify the win handing the Spartans their first conference loss of the season.

Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) had a huge weekend in net for the Beacons as she make 27 stops to pick-up a pair of victories. 


  • All-time the Beacons are now 20-6-1 against Castleton University
  • Saturday's win marked the Beacons sixth win in the last eight meetings
  • The Beacons four goals marked the most against the Spartans since their 6-3 win over Castleton on November 4, 2017 in Boston
  • Cozich's two-point day marked the first of the regular season for the sophomore forward
  • Ryan's two-point day was also the first of the season for the junior, who now has a goal in back-to-back games


The Beacons will host Williams College on Saturday at 1 pm on the first day of the 13th Annual Codfish Bowl.
