PAWTUCKET, R.I. - A Kathryn Mason power-play goal at 5:35 of the third period proved to be the deciding goal as Johnson & Wales University slipped past women's hockey by the final of 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Lynch Arena.
UMass Boston 2, Johnson & Wales University 3
UMass Boston (2-5-0, 1-4-0 New England Hockey Conference)
Johnson & Wales U. (2-5-0, 2-3-0 New England Hockey Conference)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beacons, who trailed for the entirety of Saturday's contest, tried to mount a late comeback in the final stanza. Edy Moritz (Guilford, Conn.) netted a power-play goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Mason penalty shot goal would remain as the deciding tally, as the Wildcats held the Beacons scoreless for the closing minutes.
Johnson and Wales would score two of their three goals in a five-minute span in the opening period. UMB would cut into the deficit late in the second with a Bri Colucci (Lancaster, N.Y.) power-play goal, which she scored off a Jane Morrisette (Pembroke, Mass.) assist.
Neither team really held an advantage offensively, with the Wildcats outshooting the Beacons 20-19. UMB did pound J&W in the third period 8-2 but were forced to settle for the only goal.
Alyssa DePippo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) collected 17 saves but was handed the tough conference loss. Jasmine Mucci earned her first win of the campaign after making 17 saves of-her-own.
