Lake Forest Downs Women’s Hockey in Codfish Championship

BOSTON, Mass. – Behind 13 saves from tournament MVP Stacey Dierking and a combined 3-for-7 showing on the power-play the Foresters of Lake Forest College (5-2-4) defeated women's hockey (4-7-1) by the final of 5-1 to win the 6th Annual UMass Boston Codfish Bowl Tournament championship Friday evening in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.

The tournament title is the first of the Foresters, who were making their second appearance in the Codfish Bowl.  They also became the first non-NESCAC team to win the tournament title with the first four going to Trinity College (Conn.) and last year's going to Bowdoin College.

All-Tournament honoree Michelle Greeneway proved to be the difference maker in the two-day affair.  In the championship Greeneway capped off a three-goal second period by the Foresters, before later sealing the victory on a shorthanded empty-netter late in the third.  Fellow All-Tournament selection, Melissa Paluch recorded three assists to close out the tournament with a combined five points (1g, 4a).

With Friday's victory, Dierking improved to 2-0-0 on the year, and finished the Codfish with a combined 29 saves respectively.

For the Beacons, their lone goal of the night came from All-Tournament honoree Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) with just 30 seconds remaining in the third period.  Dylan Caron (Burrillville, R.I.) and Angela Dandreo (Swampscott, Mass.) were each credited with an assist.  Sarahanne Cavolo (Roxbury, N.H.), who scored the first goal of the tournament for UMB in yesterday's 2-1 win over Stevenson also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Between the pipes Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) combined for 30 stops in the loss and now stands at 3-2-0 on the season.  As a team the Beacons were 0-for-3 on the power-play, while the Foresters record three of their five goals on the power-play.

The two teams were evenly matched through the first 20 minutes of play.  The officials let the two squads battle for control in the opening frame with neither team able to capitalize.  In the second period, UMB was whistled for a combined four penalties, which gave the Foresters the window they needed to take control of the scoreboard.  On the power-play, Lake Forest was 2-for-4 in the second.

Things would loosen back-up in the third, but with a three goal lead going into the period the Beacons were unable to build any offensive momentum.  Lake Forest closed out the final period 1-for-2 on the power-play, while UMB went 0-for-3.

Women's Hockey returns to action on Tuesday when they host Buffalo State College at 4 p.m.
