BRUNSWICK, Maine – A three-goal first period would prove to be the deciding factor as the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College defeated women's hockey by the final of 4-1 Tuesday evening at Watson Arena in a non-conference match-up.
Tuesday's loss dropped the Beacons to 2-4-1 on the season, while the Polar Bears improved to 1-1-0 overall.
Bowdoin got on the scoreboard at the 8:30 mark of the opening period when Mallory Andrews drove home her first goal of the 2012-13 season. Schuyler Nardelli and Ariana Bourge would then make it a three-goal affair as the duo each netted their first goals of the season in the final two minutes of the first period.
After the intermission, Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.) got the Beacons on the board when she drove home her first power-play tally of the season at the 16:55 mark. Bowdoin responded right back with their fourth goal just over two minutes later to clinch the non-conference win.
Assisting on Karils' goal was Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.), her first helper of the year. On the day the Beacons total 17 shots, while the host Polar Bears managed a combined 38. Freshman netminder Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) made a total of 34 stops for the Beacons, while Tara Connlly combined for 16 saves to earn her first win of the season.
Each team posted a power-play goal in Tuesday's contest, with the Polar Bears finished 1-for-4, while UMB went 1-for-5 overall.
